Regular check-ups monitor menstrual health, discussing any irregularities like Heavy Bleeding, painful periods, or missed periods. Especially if these symptoms are seen after menopause, they need to be evaluated thoroughly.

For women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS/PCOD), Endometriosis, Polyps or other reproductive health issues, a yearly check-up is important to manage symptoms and prevent further complications.

One of the most critical reasons to undergo regular check-ups is to screen for Gynaecological Cancers. Many of these cancers like Cervical Cancer, Endometrial Cancer and Ovarian Cancer, may not cause symptoms in the early stages. A Pap Smear and Endometrial Biopsy, along with a physical pelvic examination by the doctor can help detect abnormalities before they progress into full-blown cancer.

The doctor will do a thorough review of symptoms and perform a physical examination of the pelvis. A Pap Smear and Endometrial may be done as and when required. Any doubts regarding fertility, family planning, methods of contraception can be discussed. Pros and Cons of treatment options will be explained. If needed, any further evaluations like an ultrasound scan and blood tests can be done.

Uterine fibroids in or on the womb (uterus) are non-cancerous. Depending on where the fibroids are, Severe, cramping period pain and heavy menstrual bleeding are associated with/without other symptoms like diffuse pain and pressure in the abdomen. Fibroids consist of muscle cells and connective tissues. Their size, shape, and location vary.

FAQ's ON #Women's Health
WHAT CAUSES FIBROIDS IN WOMEN?

Fibroids affect up to 50 per cent of all women, and high levels of estrogen increase the risk of developing these growths. Fibroids may also have genetic causes. Fibroids are most common in women in their 30s and 40s.

A pelvic Exam helps you identify fibroids; an ultrasound scan of the uterus and pelvic region gives a better understanding and clarity.

Fibroids very rarely become cancerous. Less than one in every 1,000 women will develop a cancerous fibroid. Current research suggests that fibroids do not increase your risk of cancer either.

Most of the fibroid cases cause few to no symptoms. However, patients can occasionally experience fibroid cyst pain. The patients typically describe the pain as dull pressure in the pelvic area.

Most uterine fibroid cases do not cause infertility. However, they can make conception [conceiving] more difficult as they may block the fallopian tubes and minimize the space within the uterus.

You do not need to seek treatment for fibroids unless you have noticed discomfort or painful symptoms. Many patients don’t experience symptoms at all. However, Doctor Sumana S & the team at Atharv Women Care & Fertility Centre can help treat fibroids and with care.
